Livestock Systems Research Programme

This is the Programme that extends the innovations made by the Institute and adapts them to the conditions in which the livestock farmers operate with a view to improving the productivity of the livestock and livelihood of the owners of the animals. They study the traditional production systems of the indigenous farmers and introduce new systems that can be adapted by them for higher productivity. In doing this, we have established Agricultural Research Outreach Centres (AROC) in selected villages and schools.

Dachung Dalyop Dung is an Associate Professor in the field of ruminant nutrition, who obtained his Doctorate degree in the University of New England Australia and is currently Programme Leader of the Livestock Systems Research Programme of the National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) of Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria Nigeria. After completion of the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) he was Lecturer animal science and manager poultry farm at the Plateau state college of education Gindiri for a three year period before joining NAPRI as a Research Fellow and now an Associate Professor. While at NAPRI he has served as Assistant Seminar Coordinator for the weekly seminar series until 2014. In the Animal Science Department of ABU Zaria he has taught Postgraduate courses in Digestive Physiology, Energy Metabolism, Ruminant Nutrition and Pasture Production as well as supervision and internal examination. Currently as Programme Leader, he oversees proposal development, daily activities and general research and extension of appropriate livestock technologies to farmers as well as linkage with sister Agricultural Institutes in pursuit of technology transfer and extension activities. Linkage with Agricultural Development Projects (ADPs) of the states and Federal Capital Territory helps in reaching out to cover the national mandate of NAPRI. As an Animal Scientist he has registered with the Nigerian Institute for Animal Science (NIAS), NIAS RAS and is a member of the Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP) and has been honoured as MNSAP; regular conference attendance with these registered professional bodies has helped to widen the scope of knowledge in animal production. Collaborative research in the crop-livestock system has enabled the assessment of dual-purpose groundnuts for use by crop-livestock farmers; while research in the use of hydroponic fodder has widened the scope of information needed by farmers to make informed decisions on the use or otherwise of hydroponic fodder. Another notable achievement has been the establishment of Agricultural Research Outreach Centres (AROCs) through the World Bank facility brought about by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. As Coordinator, he ensured these AROCs facilitated the offer of technology at the doorsteps of schools and villages contiguous to NAPRI.
